Shape Up for Life
So…you're not eighteen anymore, and well, getting out of bed in the morning is no longer the
pleasure you're sure it once was. Have you forgotten what it was like to feel fresh and alive when
you wake up? Do you feel lifeless, overweight, and miserable? If so, I've got some good news for
you!
The point is that you know you need to get up, and shape up, but maybe you aren’t sure just where to
start. Beginning an exercise regimen seems like a distant goal that can never be accomplished with
your busy schedule right? Wrong! Not only is exercise do-able, but it is also necessary for life.
That’s right – necessary for life! Without exercise, your body can never be what it was meant to be.
In order for your muscles, heart, and other organs to function at their optimum level, you must keep
them strong.
Throw away your diet books
Let's start by looking back at the issue of diet and nutrition. If you're one of those people
who've tried every diet going, you will have noticed that all the books you have ever read about
diet had a tiny chapter tucked away in the back somewhere about exercise. It was usually so
insignificant; it was akin to the small print in a dubious document.
The news is, that is exactly what the exercise chapter in a diet book is. It's the author's
disclaimer. "If you do not succeed on my diet, it's not my fault. You also needed to exercise".
So, think back to every diet you ever went on and then put on weight later, Stop beating yourself up
for being a failure. The diet could never have worked because I guarantee most of them were
impractical and impossible to maintain long-term. But, as we all know, the hype surrounding them and
the huge amount of advertising gimmicks involved make it almost impossible for you and thousands,
maybe millions, of others to resist.
It's now time to wise up, throw away the diet books, and concentrate on the topic of that one small
chapter. Why? Because without exercise it is impossible to be healthy. Our bodies were meant to be
moved, and vigorously at that. Sorry, you cannot have your cake and eat it too, but admit it - you
have always known that haven’t you? Up until now, exercise may have been a dirty word in your
vocabulary, but it's time to change your perspective
Consider the following:
Do you want to be able to run around, play and spend quality time with your kids?
Do you want to enjoy the countryside with your family? Do you want to ski, hike, roller blade, play
tennis or go jogging without feeling as though you are going to die of exhaustion after only a small
amount of activity? Are you afraid that you might be sitting on the sideline watching, as life
passes you by?
Do you want to reach middle age and beyond pain free, or do you want to sit around with your friends
discussing your latest aches and pains and greatest medication to fix them? Isn’t there something
better you could do with your time and energy? Of course there is!
Do you long to look in the mirror and not be saddened and discouraged by what you see? Thin doesn’t
mean beautiful, but healthy and vigorous is always attractive. Having a fit body also allows us to
age gracefully.
(For those of you living abroad) Remember it is difficult to make life changes, but especially
difficult if you are an expatriate and new to living abroad. Bear in mind that a coach can get you
get motivated and help you to find groups to join and ways to get integrated. Arriving in a strange
country where you have no friends can be a lonely time. It's easy to stay in the house, turn to
food and/or television, and calls home for comfort. If you do take this route, you will probably
gain weight, be unhappy and get out of shape. But the good news is that this really isn't
necessary! There is lots of support out there for you. I or another coach in your area, can help
you find the things that interest you and get you involved.
A healthy Body leads to a healthy mind
Not only does exercise help build the body, but it also strengthens the mind. Studies show that
physical activity actually increases serotonin levels in the brain which in turn boosts moods and
reduces feelings of depression. After exercising, you will also find that you are calmer and
happier. Researchers report that regular aerobic exercise can be just as effective as
antidepressant drugs and cognitive therapy in reducing adult depression.
Researchers at the University of Texas' South-western Medical Centre, Alberta Children's Hospital
and the Cooper Institute conducted a study and the results were reported in January of this year.
They found people who exercised 30 minutes three to five times a week show a 50 percent drop in
depression, and even those who exercised moderately registered a 30 percent decline.
"The effect you find using aerobic exercise alone in treating clinical depression is similar to
what you find with antidepressant medications," said Madhukar Trivedi, a University of Texas
professor and author of the study. "The key is the intensity of the exercise and continuing it for
30 to 35 minutes per day."
The study, which included 80 people randomly placed into five groups with varying exercise levels,
was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and fitness equipment maker Technogym.
Excuses, excuses...
It's easy to find excuses; and that's what they are, excuses, for why you just don't have time to
exercise. You have work to finish, the children to see to, family responsibilities, calls to make,
or you're just plain too tired.
However, making time for exercise every day will, without a doubt enable you to give more,
physically and emotionally, to yourself, your family, your work, and every other important aspect of
your life. Even chores are not such an effort if you've had time to do something for yourself
first.
Pick up the remote control
...and turn off the television. If you spend only one hour a day watching television, this adds up
to, yes 365 hours a year, or to put it another way, nine, forty hour weeks. Horrifying thought
isn't it?
We don’t have to spend all day exercising. Studies, such as the one mentioned above, suggest 30-35
minutes per day. That’s the time of only one half-hour sitcom. It might seem impossible right now
to miss a day of your favourite soap or DIY program, but within a month of becoming involved in your
own life, you will have forgotten all about them.
What type are you?
What sort of sports are you interested in?. Maybe there issomething you have always wanted to do.
Make some enquiries give it a try! Take lessons, it's NEVER too late to start. Once again
contact me if you need help finding something.
1. Join your local gym, you will find it's full of women just like you, especially if you go in
the morning just after the school run.
2. If the gym is not your scene, what about horse riding, rock climbing, rollerblading, hiking,
Nordic walking or jogging. If you don't think you'll keep it up doing it on your own, join a
group or if there isn't one start your own. Advertise in your local newspaper.
3. Experiment with new things, try to do something every day, weather it's a trip to your local
water park with the family, skiing, a game of squash, tennis or badminton. It can be as light as a
walk in the park with a friend or a full on Power Yoga class. Try it all!
But... don't overdo things in the beginning. The old adage "If it doesn't hurt it's not doing
you any good" is rubbish This simply means is that you will ache for three days, become
discouraged and maybe even give up.
Gently does it.
Build up your routine gently and enjoy every minute of it, before you know what's happened:
1. Exercise will be an enjoyable part of your life.
2. You won't get as many colds and flu’s.
3. You'll have much more energy.
4. That midday slump will have become a thing of the past.
5. You won't feel so exhausted in the evening.
6. You’ll find that you are consistently in a better mood.
7. You will look and feel more attractive.
8. You will feel more self confident.
9. Your posture and body shape will improve.
10 Your overall health will improve.
Best of all your family will love you for spending quality time with them, and getting out of bed in
the morning will be a pleasure because you have so much to look forward to.
Anti-Aging Fasting
Copyright (c) 2007 Stephen Lau
Fasting is anti-aging because it rids your body of toxins, which impair your longevity health. In addition, it helps to control your weight, which is often an aging factor.
Fasting is the most efficient and effective way of detoxification.
What is fasting?
Fasting is voluntary abstinence from food and drink, except water, for an extended period.
Fasting is not starvation which is abstinence continued beyond your body's nutrient reserves. In other words, starvation may exhaust your body's stored nutrients to the point of presenting health hazards, while fasting is still "consuming" the nutrient reserves stored in your body. There is a big difference.
Fasting has many therapeutic benefits. Fasting accelerates the self-healing process of your body, thereby enabling your body to recover speedily from any disease. Fasting temporarily stops the continuing work of your digestive system, instrumental in reserving energy for your self-healing. Your body may now utilize the energy for self-healing, which otherwise normally might be expended on secreting digestive enzymes to break down the food for distribution of nutrients throughout your body.
Fasting slows down your aging process by keeping your arteries young (often hardened by cholesterol, fats, inorganic minerals and fibrous tissues). Fasting facilitates the removal of accumulated substances that may damage cell functions, thereby slowing down your aging process and extending your lifespan.
Fasting may alleviate your body pain and rid your body of drug dependence. Remember, longevity is often a drug-free life.
Fasting relieves the burden of not only your digestive tract, but also your liver and kidneys, which have to work extra hard to remove additives and toxins accumulated in your body through improper eating.
Fasting produces powerful detoxifying effects in your body not achievable by any diet, restricted or supplemented.
Fasting decreases your blood pressure by softening your blood vessels.
Fasting activates the immune system in your body.
Fasting removes the cause of any chronic disease you may have by removing the toxins, not just the symptoms, as in the case of medication.
Fasting facilitates you, if you are a smoker, to quit smoking during a fast.
Essentially, there is only one type of fasting: pure water fasting. Juice fasting is not fasting: it is not anti-inflammatory; only pure water fasting is. Vegetable or fruit fasting is not fasting: it is more of a healthful diet. Only pure water fasting is complete and total fasting, which has the capability to break down fat, abnormal cells, plaque, and even tumors. Pure water fasting is the most efficient natural method of detoxification.
How safe is fasting?
Fasting is both natural and safe. Your body system has the capability to fast, and your body has the ability to fast safely. Generally, it takes more than forty days to exhaust all the nutrients stored in your body. That is why in the Bible Jesus fasted for forty days. In general, your body will still have more than adequate reserves of proteins, fats, minerals, and vitamins to maintain its normal function during a fast. In fact, during a fast, your body conserves its muscle and lean body tissues.
For centuries, people have practiced fasting all over the world.
Animals instinctively fast when they are sick or wounded. However, humans in similar situations erroneously believe they need to eat to regain strength, thus making them even sicker and weaker.
To prepare for a fast, eat more vegetables and fruits prior to a fast. Reduce the consumption of meat, and refrain from eating any meat the day before a fast.
During a fast, your body naturally increases mucous production to wash away viruses and infected cells. It may even induce a slight fever to activate your immune system. Your body discharges toxins and chemicals through your skin, mucous membranes, liver, and kidneys. Due to hormonal and metabolic changes, you may feel slightly colder. That is natural and normal. Just keep warm to conserve your energy and to facilitate rapid elimination. One common phenomenon is dehydration through excessive loss of water. Drinking more water is recommended during a fast.
You no longer have any bowel movement after the first day. That, too, is normal.
During a fast, you need less sleep than usual. You are fully refreshed with from three to six hours of sleep. A fast is invigorating.
Remember, the more you fast, the less uncomfortable you will feel. Normal functioning of the body will resume upon removal of all causes of functional impairment.
On the first day, you feel pangs of hunger, and a white coating forms on your tongue. On the second day, you begin to feel gradual dissipation of hunger, and there is more white coating on your tongue. On the third day, you may feel complete disappearance of hunger and the clearance of coating on your tongue.
The first three days of a fast are most challenging. However, once the challenge is overcome, you are well on the way to rejuvenation of your entire body. A clear tongue and clean breath are a good indication that the cleansing is more or less complete.
The length of a fast depends very much on an individual. The following is just a general guideline: a one-day fast, as often as required, preferably weekly, for good maintenance; a three-to-four-day fast for general health and well being, several times a year; a two-week fast for complete internal cleansing, every year or so; and a three-week fast (or even longer) for curing a specific disease, under the supervision of a physician
Always consult your physician first if you go on a fast longer than three to four days. Stop the fast immediately if there is significant increase in physical weakness, or drastic drop in blood pressure.
A one-day fast is ideal for maintenance, but may not be too effective for deep cleansing. Regular fasting minimizes the risk of a disabling disease later in life, and is therefore anti-aging..

Chuck The Fat
Many of us would like to find easy ways to lose weight. Right now, we will talk about exactly that. It is not as hard as you may think. We all have friends who seem to defy nature and eat just about anything they can get their hands on without flinching. After eating whatever they want, they then wash it down with a half gallon of milk or something.
Sound like anybody you know? But throughout the day, we get thirsty and need to drink something. What do we turn to mostly? Sodas. Why? Because they taste great and are easy to get. Those shrewd folks down at Coca Cola and Pepsi have done a great job at providing many places for us to grab a soda at any location.
Well, you shouldn't be doing that. There are two reasons why. One is because it is wasted calories. Your body doesn't get any benefit from drinking sodas. You might get some pep from the caffeine, but that's about it. You might get a slight sugar rush, but it won't be anything that lasts. The second reason is, because we are only slightly hungry. We aren't hungry enough to go get something to eat, but a drink will satisfy us enough to our next meal.
Instead of drinking sodas all day long, drink juice. More specifically, juice with the pulp in it. I know what you are thinking. There is more of a purpose to this than moving your bowels. We all have had a bit of a problem in the bathroom department and have ran for the juice with the pulp in it. Juice with the pulp in it will fill you up. Unlike sodas, there is something actually there to curb your hunger. You will drink less because you will get full faster. Try it, you'll be surprised.
Always stick to wheat bread. Don't eat the white stuff. Whole wheat products are known to stabilize blood sugar levels. This means you won't get hungry as fast. This is an easy way to curb your hunger. There are also supplements to help do this job but stick to only natural ones without side effects.
Here are some tips you can use when making sandwiches. Avoid cheese. We like to put cheese on everything these days, don't we. I won't be surprised if some day they make a cheese covered soda can. This is a heart attack waiting to happen. There is no reason to eat this much cheese. One of the ways you can cut down on the amount of cheese you eat is by shredding it. Use shredded cheese instead of cheese slices. You can cover the same amount of area, with less cheese. You can also do this on salads as well. Luckily, these days, there are now fat-free options for your shredded and sliced cheese needs too. Use them.
Cut down on the mayo. I would suggest that you cut this condiment completely and not even eat the stuff. I know some people who put so much mayo on their sandwiches, I can't see how they eat them. I can't see how they can taste anything but the mayo. But, hey, to each, his own...unless you want to lose weight. A great alternative to mayo is to put a little fat-free Italian dressing on your sandwich. Just enough so you can taste it. This will really help get rid of the fat. And, if you make your own dressing, you can decide how much oil you want in it. Another alternative is to use hummus on your sandwich. I love this option since you can buy it fat free. For those of you who dont know what hummus is, its a Greek chickpea puree with different flavors added. I prefer garlic flavor. Its good. Try it.
Cut down on bread. If you are going out to eat and the waiter drops a bread basket on the table, push it away. Don't eat the bread. Or, better yet, ask him to take it away. The more carbs you can get away from, the better. Cut out the silly snacks. Don't scarf down Doritos in between meals. Instead grab an apple or some veggie sticks. You will be amazed at how good they are once you give them a chance. I love green peppers sprinkled with a little salt. Hummus comes in great here too with fresh cut bell peppers. I will take these any day over potato chips.
Stay away from fatty meats. Don't go to the store and buy the most fatty cuts of pork you can get. Take it home and trim the fat off of it if you have to. There are tons of ways you can cook lean meat so that it isn't dry. That is why most people like the fat in the meat, it adds juice and flavor. If you use herbs and spices, you can solve any lack of flavor problems that the fat would normally provide.
Stay away from too much dairy product. No need to fill up on ice cream that is full of fat. Instead, if you must have it, go for the low fat and fat free versions. Try to get ice cream with a lot of fruit in it or add your own fruit. You won't notice the missing fat if you add some of your own favorite fruit to it.
Avoid frying stuff. Learn how to bake, broil and steam your food. You'd be surprised at how much fat frying actually adds to your food. Yes, it does taste better, but it won't help your waist any. You can also sautee your foods in healthier oil such as Canola and Olive oils.
There you have it. That's not so bad, is it? I promise you, it will get much easier the more you do it.
